Lamond & Murray is one of the country’s leading sub-contract gear manufacturers, with over 30 years’ experience servicing customers across the UK and exporting internationally to countries including Germany, Canada and Sweden.

The family-run company was established in 1921 to manufacture haulages or winding equipment for the Scottish coal mining industry and in the late 1940s, it diversified into gear manufacturing. Today, in the hands of the third generation brothers, Iain and Alastair Lamond, it produces a wide range of gears up to 2.5 metres in diameter for a range of sectors including renewables.

Project Background

Lamond & Murray has invested in new state of the art machinery with the aim of improving manufacturing efficiencies and supporting its growth into new markets in the UK and abroad.

A Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) grant of £130,000 from Scottish Enterprise, coupled with private funding from Lombard, has enabled the manufacturer to invest in two new Computer Numerical Control machines which are used to turn, mill and drill parts prior to and after gear cutting. The new equipment not only brings about greater efficiencies but also presents opportunities for the company in the onshore wind sector as well as the oil and gas sector.

The RSA award has also enabled Lamond & Murray to refurbish its workshop and recruit three employees, taking its staff numbers to 34.

Support Received

Lamond & Murray worked closely with Scottish Enterprise on its RSA application, its third over a ten year period.

From the initial report - an outline of the project - through to the official application, Lamond & Murray was supported by Scottish Enterprise and its accountant who provided the required financial information.

Quote

Iain Lamond, sales director at Lamond & Murray, said:

“This is our third RSA application to support the growth of the business, so we knew how the application process worked, adhered to the criteria and support information required, and as a result, the process was very smooth."

“This award, which has enabled us to invest in the latest technology, will generate efficiencies both financially and in terms of production, as well as present opportunities for growth into new sectors."
