New Campaign to Boost Self-Employment in Fife

Business Gateway Fife, on behalf of Fife Council Economic Development, is launching a new Be Your Own Boss campaign, starting with a roadshow that will take place across Fife, throughout March.

Delivered through workshop sessions, the Be Your Own Boss initiative will assist those who are thinking about self-employment or establishing their own business, however big or small, to turn their ideas into reality.

The two-hour roadshow sessions will include:

  • Advice on your business idea
  • Information to help you build a strong foundation
  • A business plan template
  • Funding advice and support

Have you ever wanted to swap the day job for running your own business? It is often more achievable than we think, says Fife Council's Lead Officer, for Enterprise and Business Development, Pamela Stevenson, “Be Your Own Boss is  designed to support the next generation of enterprising Fifers. Many people with aspirations to run their own business underestimate the benefits, or aren’t sure about the support available. At these informal sessions, you’ll find out more about what’s involved in starting your own business. What you need to know, who can help and what services you can access.

“If you are still simply considering self-employment or looking to develop your idea, you can get started on your dream of becoming your own boss today by attending one of our informal roadshow sessions.”

This campaign is designed further boost businesses and self-employment in the region. A diverse range of people in Fife are already reaping the benefits of going it alone, with many start-ups being run by women, young people, and those who were previously unemployed.

Cllr Lesley Laird, Fife Council's Depute Leader and Spokesperson for Planning and Economy, said: "The roadshow is taking place across the Kingdom to encourage and help people start up their own business.  Small businesses are the life blood of the economy, but starting up can be daunting.  The professional support on offer through Be Your Own Boss will help budding entrepreneurs who need a bit of advice to get the ball rolling.

“Fife has a vibrant support culture for our small businesses, and this new roadshow is just one of the ways that we are working to make the region the best place to do business.  The Council’s Economic Development Team, through their Business Gateway Fife services, support businesses, particularly SME’s and individuals, to maximise their potential through targeted business advice and training.”
Be Your Own Boss is not all about becoming an entrepreneur - these sessions will also help those considering becoming a contractor, going freelance or having a franchise.

The initiative is particularly aimed at increasing self- employment and business start-ups within communities and rural areas.  The free sessions are also of value to people who would like to be their own boss even if they don't have a business idea.
